Ho appena finito di leggere “Silenzi e Segreti” (Harlequin Mondadori, “Grandi Romanzi Storici Special”), e l’ho trovato una lettura molto affascinante, con un intreccio poderoso e un’ambientazione suggestiva – una tenuta di campagna in un’antica abbazia, niente meno! E mi ha ricordato i vecchi romanzi gotici con così tanto mistero ed elementi soprannaturali.
Hi, Deanna, I can only start saying that I’m very very proud to interview an author like you. I’ve just finished reading “Silent in the Sanctuary”, and I’ve found it very intriguing, with a ponderous plot and a suggestive setting – a country house set in an ancient Abbey!, terrific, it reminds me about those old gothic novels rich of mysteries and supernatural!
Sylvia Z. Summers: Come mai hai scelto di ambientare la casa dei March in un’abbazia? Belmont Abbey è un posto molto suggestivo e immagino che nascervi e crescervi, com’è successo a tutti i March, abbia segnato in modo indelebile la loro infanzia e il loro carattere. Ce ne puoi parlare?
Why did you choose to set the house of the Marches in an Abbey? Belmont Abbey must be a very suggestive place, that probably marked deeply the childhood of all the members of this strange family. Can you tell us about this?

Deanna Raybourn: Volevo un’ambientazione che fosse profondamente suggestiva, qualcosa di gotico e strano, proprio come hai detto. Sono sempre stata affascinata dalle case ristrutturate partendo da edifici costruiti per scopi diversi – cappelle, scuole, stazioni ferroviarie, conventi. E’ facile cambiare la struttura dei fabbricati, ma mi domando se sia altrettanto semplice alterare l’emozione di un luogo, o se qualcosa di quel che c’era prima rimanga comunque. Ho immaginato fantasmi di monaci, vecchi laghetti per le carpe e torri con orologi, sentendo che erano ciò che ci voleva per i March. Tutto questo aggiunge spessore e interesse all’ambientazione. Ciò ha reso anche più facile pianificare la struttura, perché le abbazie Cistercensi erano costruite su di uno stesso modello. Sapevo dove doveva andare ogni cosa, e come i diversi ambienti sarebbero stati adattati perché la famiglia vi potesse abitare.
I wanted a setting that would be deeply atmospheric, something Gothic and strange, and as you say, someplace very meaningful for the people who live there. I’m always fascinated by homes that are conversions from the building’s original purpose-- chapels, schools, train stations, convents. It is easy to alter the fabric of a building for another purpose, but I wonder if it is easy to alter the feeling of a place or whether some of the previous use will linger? I imagined ghostly monks and the old carp ponds and bell towers and it felt right for the Marches. It just added a great depth of interest to the setting. It also made it very easy to structure because Cistercian abbeys were built on a pattern. I knew where everything ought to go, and how the various structures would have been adapted for a family to live there.

S.Z.: In tutti i tuoi libri c’è un perfetto mix di storia, mistero e amore (questo ultimo elemento, molto apprezzato dalle lettrici di Harmony)... Cosa ne pensi di questi tre generi, e qual è secondo te il perno, l’elemento principale, attorno a cui costruire un romanzo?
In your all your books there is a perfect mix of history, mystery and romance (this last, very appreciated by harmony readers)… So, what do you think about these three literary genres, and what is, for you, the keystone – the main element – of a novel?

D.R.: Sono ingorda: mi piace che un romanzo mi dia tutti e tre questi elementi! Voglio una storia avvincente, preferibilmente con un enigma al centro. Voglio la tensione di una relazione che si sviluppa al di là del corso della storia, e mi piace essere trasportata fuori dal mio tempo da un narratore che sappia far rivivere un periodo storico diverso. Posso accontentarmi e leggere un romanzo anche con solo due di questi elementi, ma non di meno. Voglio essere totalmente coinvolta quando leggo.
I am greedy; I like a novel to give me all three of those elements! I want a compelling story, preferably with a puzzle at the heart of it. I want the tension of a relationship developing over the course of the tale, and I love to be taken out of my own time by a storyteller who can really conjure a different period. I am willing to compromise and read books with two of the three elements, but I won’t settle for less. I want to be fully engaged when I read.

S.Z.: In Silenzi e Segreti troviamo una Julia Grey molto diversa da Silenzi e Veleni, più sicura di se stessa, anche se non è la solita protagonista perfetta e indifesa di molti libri. Ho notato che spesso nei tuoi personaggi il bene e il male si confonde, e non sempre i cattivi trovano una giusta punizione ad attenderli. Come mai questa scelta?
In “Silent in the Sanctuary” we find a Julia Gray that is very different from the one of “Silent in the Grave”, she is more confident, but she isn’t the classic heroine all perfection and vulnerability. I noticed that in a great part of your characters good&evil are not marked by a clear division, and not always the villains are punished in what could be described “the right way”. What do you think?

D.R.: Penso che legge e giustizia siano molto spesso due cose diverse. Credo molto fortemente nel karma, e che ciò che di buono o cattivo facciamo al mondo poi ci venga restituito. Sono certa che questo si rifletta in ciò che succede ai diversi personaggi della serie di Julia Grey. E, onestamente, poca gente si può dire interamente buona o cattiva. La maggior parte delle persone è un affascinante miscuglio delle due cose, ed è molto interessante per me constatare quale sia, su di una scala graduata, il punto di non ritorno di ognuno, che determina quale sarà il suo destino.
I think that the law and justice are very often two different things. I believe very strongly in karma and that what good or evil you do in the world is repaid in kind to you. I think that’s reflected in what happens to the various characters in the Julia Grey series. And honestly, I think very few people are entirely good or entirely evil. Most people are a fascinating mix of both and it’s very interesting to me to see where the tipping point of the scale is to determine where they will end up.
S.Z.: Nicholas Brisbane è un personaggio maschile molto affascinante, e credo che a molte lettrici piacerebbe leggere un po’ di più riguardo i sentimenti che lo legano a Julia... Lo hai dotato di molte particolarità: ha origini nomadi, si comporta come un aristocratico, e ha il dono della “vista”… Ma per la maggior parte dei libri le sue emozioni rimangono inintelligibili… Non essere crudele! Rivelaci qualcosa del suo cuore!
Nicholas Brisbane is a very fascinating male character, and I believe that all the women readers would like to read a lot more about the feelings that bound him to Julia... You doted him of many peculiarities: he has gypsy origins, he acts like an aristocrat, and he has the gift of the “sight”... But for the great part of your novels his emotions are unintellegible for us... Don’t be so cruel! Reveal us something about his heart!

D.R: Non racconto mai troppo di Nicholas Brisbane perché penso che i suoi modi enigmatici costituiscano gran parte del suo fascino. Posso dire però che una volta che si è vinto il suo cuore, lo si ha per sempre. Non è un uomo che permetta a se stesso di amare alla leggera. Non si trova a suo agio con la vulnerabilità, la propria o quella di qualcun altro. Julia è una complicazione che non avrebbe mai cercato!
I never tell too much about Nicholas because I think his enigmatic ways are a great part of his charm. I can tell that once his heart is won, it is forever. He is not a man who permits himself to love lightly. He is not comfortable with vulnerability, his own or anyone else’s. Julia is a complication he would not have gone looking for!
